Ryan Cayabyab on Reymond Sajor exiting Philippine Idol

The eviction of Reymond Sajor from “Philippine Idol” this week has greatly frustrated Ryan Cayabyab, composer and one of the judges on ABC 5’s singing talent search program.

“What an outrage! How frustrating, but totally unsurprisingly Pinoy,” Cayabyab, or Mr. C to his colleagues, told Inquirer Entertainment on Monday, after Sajor became the third contender to be voted out of the competition.

On Sunday night, a disgruntled Mr. C said: “First of all, I’m shocked. Although right from the start we knew that what we say here has no influence on the voters. I can imagine next week, titira na ako talaga (I would be a hard-hitting judge). If the voters keep on voting out the best ones, ano matitira? Kantahan na lang ng nursery rhymes.”

The following day, Mr. C called his comment “an emotional outburst.”

“Seriously, making tira won’t even have any effect. Maybe I will just play it cool, maybe just pillory the good ones and praise the bad ones for a change,” he pointed out. “On the other hand, that might have no effect, too. Maybe I should just crack jokes?”

Stef Lazaro will always have fond memories of her experience with Philippine Idol and she is more than thankful that it has opened so many doors for her. She is quite optimistic on what the future holds for her especially since she is keen on breaking into the Pinoy music scene. It’s only the beginning for Stef’s new life here in the Philippines and Stefanatics are bound to see more of their idol in the near future.

Drae Ybañez has found a new direction in life with his joining this competition and he now knows that he was born to do music. He wants to pursue his singing even more now that he also wants to help the less fortunate in anyway he can. And what better way than using his God given talent for singing. He may be sad that he’s out of the competition but, like Stef, he does not regret any moment of his Philippine Idol experience. “PHILIPPINE IDOL,” ABC 5’s singing talent search program, canceled its first elimination round last Sunday due to technical glitches brought about by super typhoon “Milenyo.”

This made the Philippines the fifth country in “Idol” history to cancel its scheduled eviction after local producers decided not to vote off any contestant that night due to the destruction of major electric and communication lines in Luzon in the aftermath of the typhoon.

According to Sheldon Bailey, “Idol” consulting producer, similar cases happened in season 2 of “American Idol,” season 4 of “French Idol,” season 1 of “Armenian Idol” and season 2 of “Pan-Arabic Idol.”

The “Idol” franchises all cited technical problems.

“There were cases of human error in other ‘Idol’ shows,” said Perci Intalan, ABC 5 Creative and Entertainment Production head. “I just pray this won’t happen to us.”

But last week, Intalan said the voting team of “Philippine Idol” experienced difficulties when telecommunication networks failed to confirm receipt of text votes.
“The votes will still be counted for this week,” he stressed.

In order to give everyone a fair chance, the organizers decided that finalists Armarie Cruz, Mau Marcelo, Jeli Mateo, Pow Chavez, Stef Lazaro, Apple Chiu, Gian Magdangal, Ken Dingle, Drae Ybanez, Reymond Sajor, Jan Nieto and Miguel Mendoza be given one more week to compete. Maureen Marcelo was a Grand Finalist in the prestigious singing competition "Star for a Night (2002)". Maureen Marcelo is my kababayan here in Lucena City. I'm really disappointed when she was not titled as the Grand winner for "Star for a Night". If that contest was decided by judges and not by text votes, I doubt Sarah Geronimo coud stand a chance by that time.

Jeli Mateo is made to step forward, but she’s made to wait until after the wait. Break. She’s asked if she’s going back to singing. She doesn't have to wait. She makes it. Okay - great looks do pay off.

Apple Chiu is going to the second round. Ooooh. I'm glad, because I liked her voice but not her song choice. I'm sure she'll do better in the Final 12.

Pow Chavez and Mau Marcelo are left onstage. Both cried. Both were praised by the judges. Francis M thinks the people voted for Pow. Pilita chooses Pow too. Ryan chooses Pow too. Mau says it’s up to God. Pow says thanks for the right to sing for you. The people choose Pow Chavez!

AN ABC 5 OFFICIAL HAS confirmed reports that one contestant in the talent search program “Philippine Idol” has dropped out of the competition to join a rival singing contest —after another TV network reportedly approached several contestants and convinced them to switch channels.

“We are sad because kids have to face decisions like these so soon,” Perci Intalan, ABC 5 Creative and Entertainment Production head told Inquirer Entertainment on Wednesday. “They are still new in the business. From our end, we are flattered. Instead of looking elsewhere, other networks decided to just get ‘Philippine Idol’ contestants, apparently because they see that the best have come here.”

An ABC 5 insider said the one who left joined ABS-CBN’s “Pinoy Dream Academy,” which has the same format as “Idol.” “Dream Academy” is a franchise from the same Dutch company behind the Kapamilya network’s “Pinoy Big Brother.” Continued...

Thousands of applicants from all over the island of Luzon trooped to the Capital City of Manila. They lined up as early as dawn on audition day to get their chance at idol stardom. Some came in street clothes while others were dressed to kill. Some were alone while others came with the support of practically a whole barangay. But everyone of the aspiring contestants came with the hope that their talent, real or imagined, would be recognized by judges maestro Ryan Cayabyab, Pilita Corrales and Francis M.

The judges themselves were put to the test not only because they had to hear hundreds of people singing in a day but because so many of them just couldn’t say no for an answer. In the end, the judges were as exhausted as the contestants waiting for their turn outside the halls of the PICC.

1. What is the Philippine Idol Fast Tracks?Philippine Idol Fast Tracks is a way to get to the Philippine Idol auditions. If you are able to show your superb singing talent to the live audience and impress the judges at the venue, you may win a Fast Tracks pass which will entitle you to a scheduled audition in Manila, Cebu or Davao. It was created to help Philippine Idol aspirants from around the country to have the chance to join the contest, wherever they are. Fast Tracks is sponsored by MBC and RMN radio stations with the help of SM and various malls in the Philippines. Philippine Idol Fast Tracks is limited to 150 qualified registrants.

2. What do I need to join the Philippine Idol Fast Tracks?You have to be at least 16 years old but not more than 28 on July 1, 2006. You also have to be a certified Filipino citizen or of dual citizenship. Plus, be prepared to sing two (2) songs, one (1) fast, one (1) slow. And please don’t wear clothes with logos. All Fast Tracks will be held at the participating mall. The aspirant has to sing in front of a live audience and 3 judges.

3. What is the difference between the Fast Tracks and the Auditions?Philippine Idol Fast Tracks is the way to the Philippine Idol Auditions. If you win the Fast Tracks, you will get a Fast Tracks Pass which will entitle you to a scheduled audition. If you pass the Audition, you will officially become a Philippine Idol contender. If you were not able to get a pass at the Fast Tracks, you can still join the Auditions in Manila, Cebu and Davao without the convenience of a specially scheduled audition.

4. When are the Philippine Idol Auditions?In Manila, it will be held at PICC on June 3. In Davao, on June 23 and in Cebu on July 4. Please wait for announcement of venues in Davao and Cebu.
5. What do I need to join the Philippine Idol Auditions?You have to be at least 16 but not more than 28 years old on July 1, 2006 and a certified Filipino citizen or of dual citizenship. a. At least 16 but not more than 28 years old on July 1, 2006.b. A Filipino citizen or of dual citizenship (i.e., possessing both Filipino citizenship as well as foreign citizenship).
2. A contestant must bring the following on the day of the audition –
a. Completed PHILIPPINE IDOL Application Form;b. Two (2) photos: One (1) close-up (at least passport size), and one (1) full body (at least 3R size);c. Original and two (2) certified true copies of birth certificate;d. In case of contestants of dual citizenship, original and two (2) certified true copies of his Philippine passport; ande. One (1) picture I.D. (passport, driver’s license, SSS/GSIS I.D., school I.D., company I.D. and/or professional I.D.).
3. A contestant must be prepared to sing two (2) songs – one fast, one slow.
4. If you are not yet of legal age (i.e. under 18 years old), you must have your Application Form signed on your behalf by either your parent or legal guardian.
